  • Obama Announces Major Initiative to be Located on Centennial Campus

As part of a speech and visit to NC State, President Obama announced that the university will lead a $140 million public-private partnership designed to strengthen the manufacturing sector in the United States. A consortium of universities and industries will have its headquarters on Centennial Campus.

Called the "Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Next Generation Power Electronics," the research will focus its research efforts on enabling the next generation of energy-efficient, high-power electronic chips and devices by making wide band gap semiconductor technologies cost-competitive with current silicon-based power electronics.

Eighteen companies are involved, including two currently on Centennial Campus (ABB and GridBridge). In addition, six other universities will participate in the project.
