  • Lonnie Poole Golf Used for Middle School Experiment

Three eighth grade students at the Centennial Campus Middle School participated in an experiment to build and launch a "floating island" of plants designed to naturally remove contaminants from a pond at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The experiment was designed and implemented by Dr. Danesha Carley, an NCSU senior research scientist. The floating island disc is made from recycled plastic fibers and floats on the water. Over time, the plants inserted in the disc grow and take root in the water, adding to the biodiversity of the natural ecosystem and providing a natural wetland.
