  • ABB to invest $10M in ‘Smart Grid’ Center at Centennial

ABB, a provider of power and automation technology, products and services, is investing $10 million in a new “Smart Grid Center of Excellence” at Centennial Campus.

ABB maintains its U.S. headquarters in Cary.

The company recently announced plans to expand its Cary operation and to build a new production plant in North Carolina.

ABB said the center will launch at its existing Centennial Campus operation and include “several” full-time employees.

North Carolina recently agreed to provide funding support for the ABB expansions with a Job development Investment Grant.

“As the world’s largest supplier of power transmission and distribution systems, ABB has always been on the leading edge of power technology,” said Enrique Santacana, ABB’s region manager for North America. “This initiative reaffirms ABB’s commitment to the smart grid and positions us to play an even larger leadership role in its development and implementation.”

On Tuesday, ABB announced a joint project with General Motors to explore ways of utilizing batteries from electric vehicles once their service life has ended.

“ABB has a positive, long-standing relationship with North Carolina, and Raleigh in particular,” Santacana said in a statement. “The combination of North Carolina’s support for technology innovation, our great partnership with N.C. State University, the abundance of engineering talent, support from state officials, and the Triangle’s growing reputation as a hotbed of smart-grid activity make Raleigh the right place to make this investment.”

    The center will include:

    Testing and development lab

    Verification center for customer solutions

    Demonstration center

ABB also plans to work with NCSU’S FREEDM Systems Center, which focuses on smart grid technology and is supported with funding from the National Science Foundation.

Centennial Campus is home to ABB’s Power Products and Power Systems North American headquarters. ABB also conducts advanced power system technology research at NCSU.
